Location-Based Research

Location based fairytales are stories that can be fantasy or nonfiction but are related to the land and where characters reside. The story is able to achieve more realism or attraction if people think that these characters created for the purpose of a story really do exist in a known or well-known location.  A location based fairytale is what can give people the curiosity and motivation to see whether or not these characters really exist or not. Whether or not these characters exist, by using well known or specific locations the author allows readers to experience some new insights into the story.  Visiting the land after reading the story can give you even more insight on the story depending on how well the story is prepared for people to experience. With location based fairytales you can get a feel for the kind of alternate reality that people can experience if enthusiastic or curious about whom these creatures are and what they did in the story to infuse lands into the story’s scenes.

A site in New Jersey, where an abandoned fairy tale forest has not been maintained since the 1990s, was used as a fairy tale theme park that I discovered on a web site called Vacant New Jersey[3]. Within the theme park there was a collection of sets that each had their own fairy tale about Repunzel, Frosty the Snowman, fairies, and so on .  There are many other locations that I have found on this website alone that can use a story such as an abandoned home from 1754, and there are some places that already have a story such as an abandoned bus in New Jersey. The use of land for a story is a good way to begin planning a story out, that way you can figure out what kind of creatures may reside there and from where exactly the story will move on. This kind of observation and research is a great way to make a story come to life because involving land in a story that is fake can create and disperse the curiosity of whether or not the author of such a story discovered something new.

Similarly, the use of location based games allows the creator to make something in a game based on a location, and help put into perspective what it is like to be in a location through gaming.  Games are always striving to get the most accurate and realistic results of any aspect or idea of a game because developers want to make games as realistic as technology can make it.  With technology today we are able to copy or imitate parts of the world to create a setting that can have a plot.  Creating a part of the world has been done in games such as Assassin’s Creed, The Getaway, and Homefront.  The Getaway is a game that takes place in London and it has, "The most accurate depiction of London than any game,[5]" that was ever made because it was built off a software that allowed them to see London in a bird's eye view while being able to also see the height of certain objects and buildings. When I played the Getaway and began to drive around in virtual London, I wondered what it would now be like if I were actually in London. It seems that I may feel familiar with the location from thousands of miles away if I did a lot of exploring in The Getaway. The same can be said for Assassin’s Creed which uses real locations such as Jerusalem, Acre, and Damascus which can be an aid to understanding and familiarizing where all these countries are located.  Location based games can be a fascinating way to learn and familiarize yourself with landscapes that exist many miles away, but it could also be a way of certifying the premises of a game by using location based references of locations such as a police station, a fire station, or a hospital.

Location based services is a service from a location where a mobile network accessible with a mobile device such as a smartphone can be used for a variety of reasons. This location based service is a way to stay in contact through locations that have service for smartphones, and the service is determined by where you are located.  The use of location based services helps people keep in touch with people that could save their life and also allow you to call for support for your car, or get directions to get somewhere faster.  There are so many uses for location based services that it has become a necessity because it allows people to have many options to choose in what form to communicate with others without having to find a pay phone or a computer. Upon losing a location based service people who have become accustomed to having and using the mobile network to update their web sites, chat, or talk can feel uneasy and anxious; this in turn can causes them to get better service by using their location to aquire a better signal.  Our way of utilizing the mobile network has opened up endless possibilities to constant entertainment which in turn has caused people to focus within the reality of a location based network while being present in a classroom, at work, or in your car.

The utilization of location based marketing has been a way of putting businesses on the map by use of applications called Gowalla and Foursquare. These companies advertise other businesses for people to see via their location based network, and has so far allowed places like Strange Brew Coffee House[6] in Mississippi to increase their business by offering 10 percent discounts to anyone who uses Gowalla to find the coffee house via the location based service.  Using Gowalla or Foursquare as a means to increase business for businesses throughout the world is a great way to avoid the same locations. The discovery of different locations to eat based on Foursquare public network includes millions of other people who have tasted and rated the food. The article about the Strange Brew coffee house states that amount of users on Foursquare, "is expected to soar.[6]"

Using location based services is something that gives potential to give and use locations to recollect your thoughts from a story or a message to you by using the readily location based service that directly relates to specific land.  In the 1990s when the fairy tale theme park existed, it was one of the only location based services that people could find because there was not the technology to utilize location based services like we do nowadays. Due to our advancement in location based services we have made the service more widespread and very popular to people of all ages.  Games that have been created through looking at a location have achieved extra realism and the more developers utilize these efforts the more they will continue to make games that are more and more realistic in order to give the feeling of being in some other location around the world. With the evolution of technology in games we will sometime in the near future have games with a replica of Earth in the form of polygons.

Location based services are such a benefit to people nowadays because situations in todays era rely on people to call when stranded on the side of the road or are too drunk to drive.  People that have been utilizing location based services have become very comfortable with it, and since then a lot of people have have relied on it for emergencies because it just seems so practical.  A lot of money goes into purchasing a smartphone and when somebody also pays for the monthly service then they probably expect from the location based service provider the utmost quality and reliability.  Companies today have been making use of the location based marketing application that advertises businesses while rating them from best to worst.  This new location based feature has helped to expose more restaurants or food places for the businesses that have trouble getting noticed.  Location based features have allowed for more entertainment and new experiences to be revealed to people that take interest in what they find in a location based on a service, a game, a fairytale, or something new.

The Story of the location based fairy

                                           Friar Tuck & Chili Bean

One day as two young hamsters scurried home to their mother they came
upon a net which lay on the ground. Friar Tuck, the oldest of the two sniffed
cautiously at the net. “What's that?” Chili Bean asked her sister.
“I'm not sure, but I think we should just go around it.”
“What are you afraid!”
Chili taunted her sister and hopped towards the
curious object. Friar quickly ran after her, but as soon as their tiny paws
touched the net the edges sprung up around them and flew into the air. Both
Chili and Friar squeaked in fear as they found themselves hanging upside down
from a tree branch! Before the little hamsters had time to think they heard a
lound crashing sound from the bushes and a tall creature with wiry gray hair on
its head and face burst onto the path.
“Ha!” the creature cried in triumph as he reached up to retrieve the
net.
“What the heck is that thing?” Chili squeaked.
“I think it is a human. Remember Mom warned us about them, she said
they capture hamsters and keep them in tiny cages just for fun!” Friar panted
as she tried to wriggle her nose through one of the holes in the net. Chili
whimpered and curled into a little ball. Friar kicked her sister in the stomach
“Stop crying! We have to try to get out of here, see if you can chew through
this thread!” Both hamsters recoiled in disgust as soon as their teeth tasted
the thread.

“Ugh! What is that?” Chili tried to spit the bad taste from her mouth
when the human shook the net violently. “You two stop that now, you hear! There
ain't no reason to be afraid, you're going to a nice home.” The man stopped
outside of a shabby looking warehouse. Once inside the hamsters were placed on
a cold, hard table as the man grabbed two wire cages from  the opposite side of the room. “Chili Bean!”
screamed Friar as the man groped inside the bag for her sister. Friar latched
her teeth onto the man's thumb until she tasted his blood in her mouth. “Ouch!”
the man roughly grabbed Friar and flung her hard into one of the cages. Friar
whimpered as everything around her went black.

Memories of being lifted and distanced from my nurturing mother made me
aware of the memories I had, and made me want to escape no matter the
consequences.  I wanted to risk it all just so I could die trying instead of waiting for death to come to me.  All I really have to do is run hard into the front of the cage to push it over the edge of the counter and hopefully make an opening somewhere.  As I stood contemplating whether or not I should just knock this cage over right now the thief who stole me and my brother from my family walks into the room through the door facing my cage and says, “How are you doing my poor little buddy, your
brother is a special one and hopefully you are to that way you could be on the
same team.” The human put some food in my container and topped off my supply of
water, and left after saying, “See you.” I couldn’t help but think something
was going to happen to me next soon, so I decided that I would escape tonight
since the humans were obviously still roaming.

As the sun shined at my cage I realized that the sun was disappearing,
but I still wanted to wait a little longer before attempting to escape. I began
to close my eyes and attempted to fall asleep; until I heard something approach
the door.  I immediately looked and saw
two humans enter the door and approach the cage I was in; I was so scared I
began to shake and then I had to go to the bathroom really bad.  The humans simply picked up the cage using
the handle above me and walked somewhere and then somewhere again in the middle
of a huge square cage. There were several small tunnels leading to a bed twice
the size of me, and as I took notice of it I became unaware of who was about to
grab me.  Being picked up by the skin on
my back I began to urinate, kick, and poop to try and escape this fate, until
suddenly I was dropped and I decided to run for it. Running counter-clockwise
for my life around this oversized bed that was about to be a part of my fate I
looked to my right and noticed an opening that I could escape through. On my
next lap I decided to head for that escape route and as I did I jumped through
the opening successfully, and kept on running.

As I kept running I was so happy to have escaped, and for a moment I
dreamt of home. In the middle of dreaming I began walking and thinking about my
brother whom I wanted to rescue if possible. Looking through every opening I
could find I stumbled upon a room with the windows covered and almost nothing
in it but a cage two times bigger than my cage but has no windows. I wanted to
make sure that my brother wasn’t in there so I got into the room and approached
the cage. While approaching the front of the cage I became aware that there was
something else in there aware of me, sniffing my scent as I sniffed his scent
we both at the same time knocked on the wall of the cage. Totally confident
that this creature was an ally I looked for a way to open the cage by first
turning the metal knob at the front, which worked.

The door to the cage swung open and out of the cage came a rodent on
all fours whom was beginning to stand on his hind legs.  I began to recognize the structure of his
face and body as my brothers. As Chili Bean stood up he recognized me as his
sister and we both reunited with a hug. Astonished by seeing my brother again I
began to wonder how he came to be so big, so I asked him, “What did the humans
do to you?”  My brother hesitated for a
second and then said, “I was injected with a formula that gave me super
strength, and more brain power.” Trying to think to myself about what a formula
was I kind of understood what he was saying, “You mean that oversized bed that
I just escaped in one of the rooms did this to you?” Chili Bean nodded his
head; nevertheless I was thankful that my brother survived the
experimentation.  Both became eager to
escape before the humans came back, so they headed for the hole Friar Tuc came
through. Friar Tuc had no problem getting through the hole, Chili was a oversized
rodent though and barely fit through the space, and managed to make the hole
bigger by using his strength.

Traveling Chili mentioned that they were in a ventilation shaft, and
could tell they where they were going. Although Friar was clueless as to how to
escape from here chili seemed to know which direction to take so she followed.
Continuing to follow Chili Bean they came to a ventilation that led upward and
Chili Bean said “I could throw you up to the top but you have to grab a hold of
the edge where the opening is.” Chili waited til friar stood on her hind legs
and then Chili squatted and grasped Friar a little below the hips and all at
once lifted Friar up so quickly that Friar barely realized that she was moving
toward the opening with so much speed. Friar positioned her arms as the exit
approached her and managed to grip the edge without barely having to do a pull
up to get up onto the surface. As Friar looked around the garden she found
herself in she looked back down the hole to see Chili Bean trying to figure out
how to get himself up Friar then looked around herself to see if she could do
anything to help, and saw a bright yellow ribbon with black marks over on a
black road. As Friar went for the ribbon she picked it up and fed it through the
hole so that hopefully chili bean could use it to get up, Friar fed the ribbon
to Chili, and Chili grabbed a hold of the other end of the ribbon.  With the ribbon end Friar tied it around part
of the exit and said “Ok, it’s ready!” The knot tightened as Chili put all his
weight on the rope, and before Friar even knew it Chili reached the top and put
one of his arms through the hole, then his other arm and his head began to
emerge. Chili Bean struggled to get out but squeezed through with out too much of
a hassle.

Their journey continued while both Friar and Chili tried to remember
where they were and it seemed it were vaguely familiar.  Chili said “Hey I remember this road  we used to follow it home before we got
snatched!” Friar and Chili began to run down the black road, and even though so
anxious to find home they remembered to stick to the rightward path.  As they both reached the end of where they
thought home should be and the black road they noticed the plants on the right
up a hill, Chili said “Hope thats our home.” Both Friar and Chili worked their way up the hill passed a round rubber
wheel and continued to proceed. Chili seems to have retained more memories of
the past than Friar did because of the injections he was given, but Friar was
relieved since she didn’t seem to have to worry about whether  they were going the right way or not.  Both hamsters became aware of their mother’s
bed and next they both realized that the entrance home should be near it. They
found and approached the hole that lead into home and before entering Chili
said, “This is it were finally home.” Friar replied “Yea I know, I hate to wake’em
all up.”  Chili began to sigh and said, “I’ll
never be normal again, and I’ll never look like my mother’s son again, but
hopefully we can look at this as a positive.” Friar chuckled and said, “Yes
this is a definite positive, let’s get into our home.” As Chili got on his four
legs he approached home while Friar watched her brother grateful for her escape
home.
